A rather dissonant and mis-shaped group of materials, some of which have already entered a stage of decomposition, form the artist’s go-to components for her sculptural works and installations, while efficiency, functionality and simplification are notions that Karantzi’s approach seems to lack completely. In the works on show traces of production remain visible, while a trial and error approach aiming at some sort of balance informs the work on a conceptual as well as on a formal level.
Hazzard tape makes an appearance in a number of the works in the exhibition. In the embroidery works for example the otherwise rigorous material is compressed, immobilized and ultimately undermined in what becomes almost an exercise in colour. Loosened, useless, harmless and out of context, the altered look of the commonplace object urges the viewer to re-evaluate what is certain and not debatable.
